Island athletes finish top five in Verona marathon

Two members of Isle of Wight running club Ryde Harriers have finished in the top ten at the Verona Marathon.

Chris Newnham and Carly Scoble made the trip to northern Italy to take part in the international marathon alongside around 3,000 others.

Chris finished in third place among the men, recording a personal best time of two hours, 23 minutes and 33 seconds, passing a Kenyan runner at kilometer 41.

Carly took fifth place among 1,500 female competitors, finishing in two hours, 55 minutes and 33 seconds, just 100 seconds off her personal best.

Both members of the Harriers finished in second place in their respective 35-39 age categories.

Carly and Chris faced 95 percent humidity conditions which slowed the peloton, well masked by moderate temperatures.

The marathon follows a route around the Italian city, including a flat and fast section on the banks of the Adige River.

The second half of the race is more isolated for the runners since the half marathon competitors have finished.

The race finished at the Verona Arena.

Carly and Chris will now turn their attention to racing over shorter distances before starting the marathon again in the spring.
